EF: What are your main focus areas and priorities for 2025?
EVK: Our top priority is ensuring people receive high-quality healthcare. While access exists, the system can be unpredictable, and quality is not always guaranteed. Our goal is to change that. No matter which MAC hospital you visit in Mexico, we want every patient to have the same experience—excellent care, high standards, and affordable pricing.
Quality is at the core of our mission. Some of our hospitals have already achieved international certifications. One key initiative is obtaining Accreditation Canada certification across our entire network. In Mexico, hospital certifications slowed after the last government transition, but the process is picking up again. With official registration reopening at the end of the year, we are eager to get all our hospitals accredited and showcase the high-quality care we provide.
We are also strengthening nursing care. Previously, nursing fell under the Chief Medical Officer’s oversight, but we now have a dedicated Chief Nurse focused on quality, empathy, and patient care. Hospitals serve people in both joyful and difficult moments—whether celebrating a birth or facing a serious health challenge. Our goal is to ensure every patient feels supported, comforted, and confident they are in good hands.
For the first time, we are also investing in marketing. We are launching a campaign to raise awareness in local communities about our high-quality services and affordable pricing. This isn’t about driving sales—it’s about making sure people know that excellent healthcare is within their reach, without financial strain.
EF: How do you balance technology and human touch in healthcare?
EVK: We are undergoing a major digital transformation to improve healthcare efficiency. In Mexico, medical records are often scattered across different specialists and hospitals. For example, a neurosurgeon might see a patient, but if that patient later visits an internal medicine doctor, their medical notes remain on the neurosurgeon’s personal laptop, making it difficult to share critical information.
We are changing that by creating a unified digital platform for all MAC hospitals. This project is a significant investment—over $10 million—and will take about two years to complete. Once implemented, it will completely transform how our hospitals operate. No matter which MAC hospital a patient visits, whether in Tijuana or Mérida, their medical history, prescriptions, and treatment records will be instantly accessible to doctors, ensuring seamless and more effective care.
This initiative is groundbreaking in Mexico, where most hospitals operate in isolation with little data sharing. We know this transformation won’t be easy, but we have the right team to make it happen. By setting this new standard, we aim to push the entire healthcare industry toward better digital integration—one that other hospitals will see the benefits of and want to follow.
EF: What are the key investments hospitals should make to scale efficiently and improve accessibility?
EVK: We are not the kind of organization that settles for the way things are. We have a natural drive to improve, push forward, and never become complacent. This mindset starts with our CEO Miguel Khoury Siman and runs through our entire team—we constantly strive to be more efficient, achieve more, and keep improving.
Our motivation comes from the people we serve. Every day, we wake up knowing our work directly impacts patients' lives. It is more than just a job; it is a mission and a way of life. Not everyone is built for this kind of commitment, but we love what we do.
One of our greatest strengths is our team. We have built strong leadership within our hospitals and across our organization—leaders who share our culture of service, affordability, and high-quality healthcare. When you combine that passion with a relentless drive to improve, there is no limit to what you can achieve.
EF: What message do you have for the next generation, and is MAC Hospitals supporting any educational initiatives?
EVK: There is no greater job than caring for others. Nothing compares to the fulfillment of helping people, and when you can do that while making a living, it becomes one of life’s greatest privileges. Being a doctor is not just a profession—it is a purpose.
I would also invite them to join MAC Hospitals. Last month, we launched a program specifically for young doctors, offering them space in our hospitals to start their practice and grow their careers. This initiative is designed to support the next generation of medical professionals, giving them the resources and backing they need to establish themselves.
We do this because we recognize how vital doctors are to their communities. Giving back is part of who we are—it is the same philosophy behind our foundation, which last year provided free surgeries for 585 people, with over 817 Operating Room hours. If we had charged for those procedures, the total cost would have been around $5 million US dollars in medical services. It is an incredible initiative, led by Ana Gaby Gómez, our foundation’s director, and something we are truly proud of.
EF: What opportunities do you see for Mexico in the international healthcare landscape?
EVK: There are many opportunities to improve efficiency in healthcare, and I genuinely believe we have a responsibility to focus on prevention. While some hospital visits—such as accidents or falls—are unavoidable, many health issues can be prevented with the right care throughout a person’s life. Our goal is to help people stay healthy and be the best version of themselves, rather than only treating them when something goes seriously wrong. By doing this, we empower communities.
We have already been working on preventive care, but we plan to expand these efforts even further. Our mission is not just to care for people when they are sick but to support them throughout their lives. That commitment is reflected in our name—Hospitales MAC stands for Médica Avanzada Contigo, which means “Advanced Medicine With You.” We want to be present not only when patients are in the hospital but also whenever they need us to help maintain their health.
It will take time to fully develop this initiative, but we are committed to building a strong, supportive healthcare presence that truly benefits the population.
EF: What is MAC Hospital’s vision for the future, and where do you see it in the coming years?
EVK: There is still plenty of room for growth in Mexico. While we are already the largest hospital chain in terms of geographical presence—operating in 20 cities and 14 states—we believe there is even more opportunity to expand. Our goal is to establish a presence in every city with a population of at least 250,000 people. Quality healthcare is essential for everyone, and we see significant potential to continue growing.
We are thrilled about our progress and incredibly proud of our team, who made it all possible. Over the past 17 years, we have worked hard to become the largest hospital network in Mexico. Today, we lead in the number of cities we serve, and we are just one hospital away from matching the network with the most locations. That will soon change—this summer, with the opening of our Santa Fe hospital, and later this year, with the inauguration of our Ciudad Juárez location, we will officially take the lead. This is a thrilling milestone, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!
EF: Why is Mexico a better investment destination compared to other countries?
EVK: I am not an economist, but I can speak from the heart. We deeply believe in Mexico and the importance of providing high-quality healthcare for everyone—not just for those who can afford to travel abroad for treatment. While investing elsewhere might offer higher returns, our commitment remains firmly rooted in Mexico and its people. This includes not only Mexicans but also the many international residents and visitors—Americans, Canadians, and Europeans—who seek medical care here. Our goal is to ensure that everyone in Mexico, regardless of their background or financial situation, has access to excellent healthcare.
EF: What is MAC Hospital's vision for 2025, and what final message would you like to share with the sector?
EVK: Our goal is to keep growing, innovating, and redefining healthcare in Mexico by finding new ways to make healthcare more efficient, higher quality and more accessible. Through process optimization, technological advancements, and a commitment to affordability, we can expand access to high-quality care—something everyone deserves.
My message is simple: stay tuned—we are not slowing down. There is still so much to accomplish, and we are excited for the future and everything that lies ahead. With the dedication of our team, and the trust of our patients, doctors and investors, we are confident that the road ahead is brighter than ever. The best is yet to come!
